For many guitarists, becoming a guitar shredder just like the pros is their goal. You must have a very good picking technique in order to improvise and shred easily.
A guitar shredder uses all sides of the pick. It is better to use round edged picks and playing it at an angle across the strings.
When you go across a string, it creates pinched harmonics which strumming the pick lightly. When you use the flesh of the thumb to bring out whining, you get sharp harmonics.
The angle can improve the speed and accuracy of an attack. Guitar shredding also contains sweep picking and circular picking.
Steve Vai, who is a great guitar shredder spins his pick around to produce different sounds.
A guitar shredder will learn to pick open handed while resting his pinky on the body of the guitar. This is called the Anchor Position.
The anchored finger serves as a pivot point which allows you to play much faster and with more control. It will allow you to pick with faster, shorter movements which help mute your strings to create more sounds.
Guitar shredders also must learn scales that are made for shredding. Study the E minor pentatonic scales sequences and then apply these to additional keys and scales.
Practice playing all exercises musically and anything you play will sound like music by breaking and timing, not just scales.
