Guitar shredding has a lot of different techniques a musician can make use of. For beginners, it is important to learn the basics first before moving to the more complicated techniques.
- Legato – A technique where the guitarist plays the notes smoothly so that each note contains no pause between them. This is done by hammering on and pulling off on the guitar strings.
- Tapping – Left hand tapping is considered a form of legato. On the other hand, right hand tapping, means fretting notes with the fingers of your picking hand. This technique is most often used during wide intervals.
- Alternate Picking – A technique that uses alternating upward and downward picking strokes. There should be a continuous up-down and down-up movement of the picking hand.
- Sweep Picking – A technique where the notes are played by sweeping across the guitar strings. In this technique, the sound of every note is strummed separately in a single motion.
These are just four of the simplest techniques of guitar shredding, there are over a hundred more out there once you get familiar with the basics. As compared to other art method such as mixed media collage techniques, guitar shredding uses more skill and expertise. It requires more time to study since you need to start from the fundamental, as with mixed media art, you just have to use your imagination in combining different art forms.
